Proximie, a leader in operating room telepresence, was hamstrung by design debt. Specifically, login and starting a new remote session to allow participants to join surgeries remotely was was cumbersome, requiring 15 clicks and up to 5 minutes to start a session. Our initial objective was to shorten this to less than 60 seconds. Additionally, the road map was already full with opportunities to leverage computer vision to quantify events in operating rooms, driving efficiencies and reducing hospital wait lists.
We quickly learned that technical constraints and legal and security concerns played a major role. Hence, we involved these disciplines in our earliest thinking, as well as carrying out research with the help of the client’s Customer Success team. This allowed us to rapidly iterate and ensure that our solutions catered to the unique sensitivities of video broadcasts of surgeries.
Our research uncovered that most sessions were started ad-hoc ‘in the moment’. Knowing this we could optimise for a much speedier session setup flow, compared to the previous default of scheduling for the future. We were also able to instill the product with moments of delight and scalable principles to enhance any future developments.
Building on this success, Proximie retained us to lead the design of their most cutting-edge developments in the areas of computer vision, hospital efficiency, and predictive analytics.
